Is Norbert's gambit worth it at Qtrade?

Because Qtrade charges no commission on ETF trades and no journal fee, there is no break-even to clear: the gambit is essentially free at any amount, so it beats paying an embedded FX spread on every conversion.

One thing to note: USD registered accounts (RRSP, RRIF, TFSA, but not FHSA) carry a quarterly administration fee, waived above a higher asset or trading-activity threshold. USD non-registered and FHSA accounts have no such fee.

Step by step at Qtrade

  1. 1Buy DLR on the TSX in your CAD account, ideally with a limit order ($0 ETF commission)
  2. 2Wait ~1 business day for the trade to settle (T+1)
  3. 3Move the shares to your USD account via Accounts > Transfer Funds > Move Securities. This is the journaling step, and Qtrade doesn't charge for it
  4. 4Sell as DLR.U for USD proceeds (the position may still display as DLR in CAD; enter the symbol as DLR.U with Canada selected as the market)
  5. 5Purchase your USD-listed ETF (ITOT, VTI, AVUS, AVUV etc.)
