  • ·Welcome offer is 20,000 TD Rewards points after your first purchase, plus 126,000 after $7,500 in net purchases within 180 days, for up to 146,000 points. The annual birthday bonus of up to 10,000 points is ongoing earn and is not counted here.
  • ·The $139 primary annual fee and the $50 first additional-card fee are rebated in the first year when you activate and make a first purchase within 3 months, so net first-year value counts the full welcome bonus.
  • ·TD Rewards redeem at about $0.005 per point (0.5cpp) through Expedia For TD, so both valuation modes use 0.5cpp. The large headline point count reflects that low per-point value.

Eligibility & fine print

  • ·Welcome bonuses are typically available only to applicants who have not held the same card, or for Amex sometimes any Amex personal card, within a defined recent window. Check the issuer's terms before applying.
  • ·Issuers reserve the right to decline an application. Approval depends on factors the issuer evaluates internally.
  • ·Annual fees, welcome bonuses, and minimum-spend requirements change. The validity date next to each card is the last date we confirmed the offer was live; always verify on the issuer's page before applying.
  • ·Minimum-spend windows start on account opening, not on first use. Plan your spending accordingly.
  • ·Welcome bonus values denominated in points depend on the redemption you choose. Cash and statement-credit redemptions tend to realize lower per-point value than transfer-partner premium-cabin redemptions.

Point valuations

Point values shown on this page are our estimates, not guarantees. Conservative reflects the easy redemption floor, typically a portal booking, statement credit or merchandise. Travel redemption reflects each program's practical better redemption, which is an airline-partner transfer on premium-cabin flights only where the program supports one. Where it does not, such as TD Rewards, Scene+ and BMO Rewards, both settings are the same. Your realized value will depend on how and when you redeem.

Point valuations were last reviewed June 2026. Small CPP differences can swing card rankings by hundreds of dollars, so treat the “Best pick” net value as a planning estimate, not a guarantee.

Tax disclaimer

Credit-card welcome bonuses are generally not considered taxable income for personal use in Canada because CRA treats them as a rebate on personal purchases, but the treatment can differ for business cards, points earned on deductible expenses, or other edge cases. Speak to a qualified accountant about your specific situation.

Frequently asked questions

What does net first-year value mean?+
The value of the welcome bonus, minus the annual fee charged in year one. Nothing else. Ranking by that rather than by headline bonus size matters because a large bonus behind a $699 fee can be worth less than a smaller bonus on a free card. What it deliberately leaves out is ongoing earn on your everyday spending, which depends on your category mix and would swamp the thing being compared here, and perks such as travel credits or lounge visits. Several cards carry a note where their ongoing rates are strong enough to change the picture after year one.
Why do the rankings change when I change the point valuation?+
Because most welcome bonuses are paid in points rather than dollars, and a point is only worth what you redeem it for. The conservative setting uses each program's easy floor, typically a portal booking, statement credit or merchandise. The higher setting uses that program's practical better redemption, which is an airline-partner transfer only where the program actually supports one: Aeroplan, Amex Membership Rewards, RBC Avion and CIBC Aventura. Where there is no premium redemption to model, the two settings are identical and the card does not move at all. TD Rewards clears through the Expedia for TD portal, Scotiabank values a Scene+ point at one cent, BMO Rewards offers no transfer partners, and Marriott Bonvoy is valued through hotel stays. Cash-back cards do not move either, since a dollar is a dollar.
Do I have to hit a minimum spend to get the welcome bonus?+
Almost always, and it is the most common reason people miss out. Offers require a set amount of spending within a qualifying window, often the first three months. The ranking treats that as pass or fail: it checks whether your monthly spend across the window clears the offer's total requirement, ranks the card with its full bonus if it does, and ranks it behind the cards you can qualify for if it does not. It does not credit part of a bonus for partial spending, so where an offer is split into tiers, open the breakdown to see each tier and the spend it needs. Never spend more than you otherwise would to chase a bonus.
Can I apply for the same card again to get another bonus?+
Usually not soon, and the rules vary by issuer. Most Canadian issuers exclude applicants who currently hold or recently held the same card, with lookback windows that differ between them and are not always published. Some restrict the bonus to people who have never held the card at all. Read the offer's eligibility wording before applying rather than assuming a previous cardholder qualifies.
Is a credit-card welcome bonus taxable in Canada?+
Generally not for personal spending. CRA has treated points and cash-back rewards earned on personal purchases as a rebate rather than income. The treatment can differ for business cards, points earned on expenses you deduct, or where rewards are converted to cash in unusual ways. Speak to an accountant about your own circumstances rather than relying on the general rule.
Should I cancel the card before the second annual fee?+
It depends on whether the card still earns its keep, and on what cancelling does to your credit profile. Closing a card reduces your total available credit and can shorten your average account age, both of which can nudge your score. Ask the issuer about downgrading to a no-fee version of the same card instead, which often preserves the account history. If you plan to apply for a mortgage soon, leave the arrangement alone until after.
